Chef Dave Caron explains, "When I tested the grill mats currently available on the market, there were several issues that were of concern to me. I felt the mats were too small, too thin, that the surface had too much texture and I didn't like their tendency to fray on the edges with extended use. We solved all of those issues by making our mats extra long, and adding an extra heavy surface layer of PTFE, the non-stick coating. What we have as a result is a very slick mat, no pun intended."
BBQ grill mats are made by surfacing fiberglass cloth with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The grill mats are used to cover the grates of a BBQ and they allow the user to grill food items that didn't use to be manageable on a grill. According to Caron, the extra surfacing of PTFE makes the food easier to manage on the mats and simplifies cleanup. It also serves to give the mats a higher level of durability and eliminates the fraying that happens with other mats over time.
The Chef Caron mats come in a larger size than other mats currently available on the market - 13 by 17 inches - and are thicker as well, at a depth of two mil. According to Caron, these features greatly improve the durability and lifespan of the product.
The Caron brothers have plans to release a series of similar products over the next year with a focus on truth in advertising and customer service.
