(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, August 23, 2014 ) Detroit, Michigan - The torrential rains came and so did the floods. Driving over to Detroit one couldn’t help notice that the skies were completely black and there were plenty of traffic back ups along the way. There were accidents and swirling red and blue police lights and yet the fans were determined to get to Saint Andrews Hall to see Echo and the Bunnymen. The long walk over to the venue was wet and the people were completely sloshed cutting through parking lots fulled with puddles of water. This was more than just a simple rain storm – it was more like, Ocean Rain.
The band launched into, “meteorites” and it was very subtle but it drew the audience in close. Lead singer Ian McCulloch was joined by original Bunnymen guitarist Wil Sergeant and played in the small Detroit ballroom. This was a rare event that hasn’t happened since the early 1980’s. Echo and the Bunnymen were playing much larger venues like New York’s Irving Plaza, and outdoor festivals. This was a much smaller event and the ticket prices were much higher than a typical show. This was an intimate evening set up for the fans.
Mac, (Ian’s nickname) has a very strong stage presence and always has. The trademark messy hair was piled up into a big rats nest. McCulloch had a long coat and completed the mysterious look with a pair of sunglasses. A lot of rock stars doing this lately. The stage setting was set up like someone’s living room complete with a small table and lamp and couches. It was an odd choice for a rock concert. Gone were the trademark stage props such as large fishing nets, dry ice fog machines, bright piercing strobe lights and tree branches. Saint Andrews Hall has a much smaller stage than other venues such as Royal Oak Music Theater or even Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
