A Smart Way to See National Parks

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 28, 2009 ) CEDAR CITY, Utah–Change the traditional idea about seeing national parks at the height of summer and choose to explore these precious landscapes in the winter.

Two national parks, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park, along with Cedar Breaks National Monument are linked by scenic byways and create a “grand circle.” Additional scenic monuments and winter recreational areas are easily accessed among the parks. Wildlife trek in the snow and go about their winter routine. Activity abounds but in ways that are quite tranquil and stimulating.

“Seasonal change is good and vacation variation even better,” says Maria Twitchell, executive director of the Cedar City-Brian Head Tourism Bureau. “Southwest Utah with fresh snow is beautiful and offers an entirely different perspective then what one might think. It’s peaceful, yet engaging. A true wonder so many more people could be enjoying.”

The Bureau recommends cross-country skiing in Bryce Canyon, and winter hiking in ZionÂ’s many canyons, including the secluded section known as Kolob. There are snowshoe and snowmobile tours through Cedar Breaks, or visitors can stop by the Cedar Breaks winter YURT for a free cup of hot chocolate and trail information. Cedar Breaks is one of the few national parks to allow snowmobiling.

Lodging that includes fireplaces and well-appointed cabins, can be found in the Brian Head Ski area, located in the heart of the national parks. The Bureau says Cedar Breaks Lodge is a full-service condominium hotel with a day spa, and Brian Head Vacation rentals offers cabin or condominium options for all budgets. Visit company Web sites at www.cedarbreakslodge.com or www.vacationbriandhead.com.

The national park winter experience is “boredom-busting” according to Twitchell and offers a different kind of winter escape. Amateur photographers, along with prepared hikers certainly appreciate the parks and types of scenery, such as frozen ice, that they encounter.

“Utilizing a local guide or outfitter assures that winter activities are not only adventuresome but safe as well,” notes Twitchell. “Families will find a winter vacation at these Utah national parks feed the mind and it’s a smart way to spend time with loved ones and friends.”

Twitchell adds that students on spring break may opt for this type of adventure vacation too.

Specializing in Cedar Breaks National Monument and Bryce Canyon cross-country skiing and snowshoeing tours, as well as ice climbing excursions and equipment rentals is Southwest Expeditions at (435) 590-1531.
