Students Build First Ever Eco-friendly Mouse-trap Model Car

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 02, 2009 ) Hong Kong - Students competed to build an Eco-friendly mouse trap model car this weekend at the sixth Epson Green Carnival. The competition took place at the “Environmental Education Expo” themed carnival at Polytechnic University and was attended by thousands of students, educators and parents. The carnival comprised many fun interactive game booths, educational displays and activities to promote environmental awareness and collaboration on environmental protection.

The Mouse trap model car competition saw students compete to design and build a model car using only only recycled materials and a toy mouse trap. The Eco-model tournament featured 126 student teams aged 10 – 15, from a number of schools, to demonstrate how easily recycled products can be incorporated into daily lives. To win, the model car had to be designed well and also successfully tow a smaller toy car along a 10m track. The winning car was made by Chang Pui Chung Memorial School fought off stiff competition to claim the top spot. Students from the winning team said, “Wow, we are so pleased to win! It was a close call as some of the other cars were really cool but we were glad ours got the prize. It has helped us to understand how old materials can be reused. Even rubbish can be fun.”

The sixth Epson Green Carnival also featured a 1-minute Green Video Competition and online Carbon Footprint Calculator design competition. Entrants took part from a number of schools throughout the SAR in these activities which further promoted environmental protection awareness. The winners of these competitions were also selected at the close of the carnival.

The carnival was well attended by several VIPs. Most notably, legislative councilor and chairperson of the Green Council Dr. Hon Priscilla Leung, who gave a speech on how Hong Kong had to do more in the area of the environmental protection. The assistant director of EPD, Vincent Tang was in attendance along with Mr. Ho Kwong Wai JP, the director of EMSD, Mr. Akihiko Sakai - director of Seiko Epson Corp. and Mr. Kazufumi Kobayashi, chairman of Epson Foundation along with other VIPs who were invited to the discuss the need for everyone to follow green practices in their everyday lives for everyone in their daily lives. They highlighted how adopting these measures was crucial in dealing with global environmental issues such as climate change and air pollution.

Dr. Hon Priscilla Leung said that the sixth Green Carnival comprised of not only game booths but also displays about environmental education, green products for school campus and talks tailor-made for educators. “We hope the Carnival will encourage participants to spread the word about taking action on green issues,” she said.

Mr. Vincent Tang pointed out that “change” in our daily life style is the only way to improve our environment. “Only through environmental education on green consumerism, simple living and avoidance of wastage, will a greener future be achieved.”

Mr. Ho Wai Kwong confirmed that the HKSAR Government has been putting efforts into promoting and developing energy efficiency so as to protect our precious environment.
