Marshall Electronics Teams With Gennum to Deliver IndustryÂ’s First Lineup of 3Gb/s Monitors

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 17, 2009 ) EL SEGUNDO, CA – Marshall Electronics, a leading manufacturer of LCD monitors for Broadcast, Studio, Television, and Production has turned to Gennum Corporation (TSX: GND) to integrate 3 gigabits per second (Gb/s) capability in their new 6.5" and 7" monitors. The V-LCD651ST-3GSDI and V-LCD70P-3GSDI are the latest addition to Marshall's successful and popular line of portable field monitors. These new camera-top monitors incorporate Gennum’s GS2970 3Gb/s multi-rate SDI receiver.

With broadcast production facilities looking to the future with 3Gb/s SDI integration, Marshall Marshall fills the void with new fully-featured, high-end monitors with full 3Gb/s and HD-SDI support. The new series of Marshall 6.5” and 7” LCD monitors offer 3Gb/s SDI, HD-SDI (1.5Gb/s single and dual link), SD-SDI, HDMI, and Component inputs. More Marshall monitors offering 3Gb/s SDI will become available later this year in a variety of sizes and configurations.

Marshall needed a reliable and cost-effective 3Gb/s solution for these new monitors. With a great relationship already in place, Marshall turned to Gennum’s GS2970 solution. “We are very pleased and impressed with Gennum’s dedication and support with 3Gb/s SDI applications,” said Nathan Mordukhay, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Marshall Electronics. “Gennum has helped us in reducing development time and by pushing us ahead of the competition.”

“Marshall’s use of the Gennum GS2970 on several popular monitor products demonstrates how Gennum enables OEMs to rapidly transition to 3 Gb/s standards, speeding their time to market,” said Vijay Sharma, director of A/V connectivity for Gennum. “As the first single-chip receive solution supporting 3 Gb/s, as well as HD and SD-SDI, the GS2970 provides an integrated solution that eliminates the need for external processing and additional components, enabling up to a 35 percent savings in board area and a 40 percent reduction in power in a variety of broadcast applications.”

About the 3Gb/s SMPTE Standard

Over the past few years, the demand for high-definition content at higher bit rates has escalated. Broadcast studios and other video production facilities have wanted to extend the life of their infrastructure by using the same hardware currently used for HD-SDI. Thus, the standardizing bodies, SMPTE and ITU, ratified a new 3Gb/s SDI standard, the SMPTE 424M (physical interface), SMPTE 425M (format mapping) and ITU-R BT.1120-3-2005, that allows for the use of the same 75-ohm coaxial cable for transmission as currently in use. This new standard, generally referred to as 3Gb/s SDI, enables higher resolution of pictures required for 1080p 50/60.

About the Gennum GS2970

The GS2970 integrates deserializer capabilities, along with integrated reclocker, voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), and digital SMPTE video and audio support. Since designers typically use a dedicated deserializer to implement HD and 3Gb/s SDI receivers and augment the deserializer with other discrete components, GennumÂ’s integrated approach helps designers realize significant cost, power and area savings in a wide range of video broadcast equipment. The GS2970 supports both Level A and Level B mapping as described in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers' (SMPTE's) 425M 3Gb/s standard.

About the Marshall V-LCD70P-3GSDI

The V-LCD70P-3GSDI is the latest addition to Marshall's successful and popular line of portable field / camera-top monitors. This new 7" monitor introduces a durable and lightweight design, weighing in at only 1.3 pounds. It features a completely digital TFT-MegaPixel high resolution LCD screen with 1.2 million pixels, 4-pin XLR power jack, and optical grade polycarbonate screen protection. Analog signals are digitized using advanced 10-bit processing with 4x oversampling and adaptive 5-line comb filter. A variety of battery adapters are available for each configuration. The V-LCD70P-3GSDI retails for $1299 and will be shipping soon.

About the Marshall V-LCD651ST-3GSDI

The V-LCD651ST-3GSDI is the newest addition to Marshall's line of Super Transflective Outdoor Monitors. This 6.5" portable field / camera-top monitor is designed specifically for outdoor applications with high ambient light. This technology minimizes surface reflection of both outdoor and indoor light, while featuring a much wider color reproduction range than typical transflective/reflective LCDs or even those with increased backlight performance. Marshall's outdoor super-transmissive LCDs provide improved visibility by producing high-contrast images and a wider viewing angle, even under diverse and challenging lighting environments. This innovative technology dramatically boosts the efficiency of the LCD backlight's light utilization, while maintaining extended temperature ratings and low power consumption for outdoor operation. The V-LCD651ST-3GSDI retails for $2199 and will be shipping soon.

NAB Demonstrations

Marshall Electronics will showcase their new 3G-capable monitors at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show being held next week in Las Vegas with a demonstration at the companyÂ’s booth (#8908) in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Gennum will also showcase its 3Gb/s SDI innovations at booth #SU9111 in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
