Remote control - TheMoveChannel Scotland

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 30, 2009 ) So you missed out on the ‘World’s best job’ of caretaking a tropical island in Queensland, Australia, but don’t despair – here comes another unusual opportunity to have a crack at – the remote Hebridean island of Canna in the Scottish Hebrides is on the look out for a special someone to take over the running of the restaurant on the island, which comes complete with residential accommodation for anyone brave enough to take on the challenge…

If you ever fancied getting away from it all, here is your chance. This will be someone’s dream job – located in a stunning wilderness far removed from the hustle bustle of life.

The crescent-shaped island of Canna lies 23 miles out in the Atlantic ocean, just south of the better known Isle of Skye.

Whoever takes on the challenge of running the restaurant/café – which is one of the remotest in the United Kingdom - will join just 17 permanent residents on the island.

The Harbor View Tearoom and Craft Shop seats 16 and is up for lease alongside residential accommodation through the National Trust for Scotland.

Passing trade comes in the form of ships and yachts that sail into the islandÂ’s harbour. There is also a ferry which runs four times a week and birdwatchers flock to enjoy CannaÂ’s abundant bird and wildlife.

The National Trust advert reads, “An opportunity has arisen to lease Canna's cafe/restaurant. Applicants must have proven catering experience and be able to open the business by Easter 2010.

“Canna is a remote island and has only 17 permanent residents. The community is interested in any additional skills applicants are able to offer.”

There is no competition for the restaurant on the island either, as there is no hotel or pub to steal away what few punters there are.

Canna is no stranger to publicity – back in 2006, the island ran an advertising campaign to try and attract families from all over the world to come and live on the island, to boost its tiny population.

Anyone brave enough to take on Harbour View must be aware that, come winter, the tourist trade dies off, and the Harbour View, traditionally, closes down. Thus, applicants must ensure they have some other skill to fall back on.

If you fancy applying for this job, (and a whole new life thrown into the bargain) contact Deb Baker, Secretary, Canna Community Association, on debbaker21@yahoo.co.uk. The closing date for applications is this coming Friday.
