The first research confirmed what many might have expected: men are more interested in photos, women are more interested in text. On average, men spend about 65% more time reviewing photos or cams than women did. Women, on the other hand, spent about 50% more time reading profile information than men did. Other studies have shown that traditional roles are increasingly reversed. Men were once expected to chase a number of women, initiate conversations, and pick up all the tabs. Increasingly, however, women are playing the field, reaching out to men they’re interested in, and offering to pay their own way. A final study reveals a few tips for spotting lies in profiles or in webcam chat rooms: (1) beware those who have very sparse profiles or avoid talking about themselves (they may be trying to limit fraudulent info so they have less to remember when confronted); and (2) if someone won’t discuss their appearance at all, they may be covering a major lie. “Almost universally, people make small adjustments when describing themselves to appear a bit more desirable, but be on the lookout for those that always change the subject,” warns Andre Starr.
