Theatre Awards Are In a Class Of Their Own With The Olivier Awards

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 19, 2012 ) London, UK -- This year’s theatre awards , on Sunday April 15, promise to be the most extravagant and ambitious occasion ever staged since the awards began in 1976.

A star-studded ceremony will take place at the Royal Opera House and will be attended by nominees from all categories, from Best Actor to Best Costume Design, the cream of theatrical producers, plus an invited audience.

But to ensure that the enthusiastic public don’t miss out on these fantastic theatre awards, a free event will take place in London’s Covent Garden piazza which will include a live stream of all the action taking place at the Opera House.

Fans who can’t get to Covent Garden on the big night can follow the theatre awards on the BBC Red Button, on BBC Radio 2, online and via Twitter.

The glamour won’t just be confined to the United Kingdom - the organisers have even arranged for Brits performing on the other side of the Atlantic to enjoy the awards at a lavish party in New York.

And theatre lovers will once again have the chance to vote for their favourite show to win a theatre award through the BBC Radio 2 Olivier Award Nominations.

The audience award nominations shortlist will be announced on March 11, and all other contenders will be revealed on March 15.

National treasures Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton, who are performing together in Sweeney Todd, will make present the show and invite the worthy winners to step up on to the illustrious Opera House stage to collect their award on this special night.

With record-breaking box office sales in 2011 generating a massive £528million, there will be no shortage of fabulous contenders for the coveted awards, and competition will be intense.

A legendary night is in store at this year’s theatre awards, which are organised by the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) and provide a fitting tribute to Theatreland’s greatest son - Sir Laurence Olivier.

About the Oliver Awards:

British theatre’s most sought-after awards have been a mark of theatrical greatness since they were inaugurated in 1976 as the Society of West End Theatre Awards. The society is now known as the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) and its glittering awards are now the Laurence Olivier Awards in honour of the theatrical legend.
