Storage Wars Reality Check: The Drama Goes to London Reports FoxSelfStorage.Com

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, August 19, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The hugely popular reality-TV show known as Storage Wars has caused storage auctions to become popular all over the world, even in London.

It is truly unlikely that you will score real treasures at your average storage auction whether it’s in London or in the USA, but if you want some of the same drama that surrounds the television show you are in luck. Where London storage auctions used to draw 10 regular bidders, now they draw crowds of 80 to 100 not counting those who aren’t registered to bid. One London auctioneer, James McLean, says that viewing a storage auction is better than going to the bingo hall or the casino.

Your average storage compound is nothing much to look at being that it’s usually a long line of units that resemble nothing more than garages. Some of these units are rented by packrats with too much stuff and too little space, while others are rented by people who are moving into smaller homes.

Normally, the only excitement surrounding storage lockers is when the cops get wind that someone they’ve arrested has one. But these days, the excitement has ratcheted up dramatically due to some of the big finds made on Storage Wars. Even those who aren’t bidding on a unit get caught up in the thrill of the chase, hoping that the next locker will be the one holding valuable firearms or newspapers from the day Elvis Presley passed away.

Storage locker bidding is a gamble, because normally you don’t see everything that’s in the lockers. Most people who store their belongings box everything up, and the bidder takes a chance on the contents of the boxes.

McLean, who sells several hundred units per year, says that you won’t make much if anything buying just one locker. You need to buy several lockers, normally a minimum of five and sometimes up to ten lockers. One of those will probably pay off, and pay you back for what you laid out on the others.

He specializes in selling tours which put together a few facilities selling storage lockers all at the same time, and has a few regular clients that show up for every tour or sale. These ten to twenty regulars usually do well although they rarely find the treasures that are found on Storage Wars.

One facet of Storage Wars that is true to life is the bickering and squabbles and people that don’t much care for each other. While it may not be as dramatic in real life as on the show, it still exists if you know what to look for.

Most of the regular bidders and buyers are somewhat irritated by the crowds that are now showing up for the auctions. They want to buy the lockers they want, load them up, and go home. The regular bidders and buyers view purchasing the contents of storage lockers and reselling those contents as a job rather than a hobby. Also, the additional bidders may drive the prices up particularly if they are new to storage locker auctions.

Another fact of Storage Wars that isn’t true to life is that we all know what was found by the end of the show. In real life, the buyers tend to keep what they found to themselves, and most storage compound staff doesn’t even ask if they found anything good. Tonya Lundy is an office manager with a storage locker facility and says that it’s none of managements’ business what is found when a locker is sold.

The show also glorifies the treasure aspect of locker auctions, while ignoring the fact that often a real person is losing everything they own. Most people who rent storage lockers aren’t using them as expensive closet space.

Here are a few definitions for those of you who think you might want to get into the world of storage locker auctions.

Your prey is anything valuable that’s been left behind in a storage locker. The rules are if the renter is unable or unwilling to pay the rent for their storage locker, the storage company seeks to recoup their costs by selling the contents of the locker at auction. You are allowed to see what’s easily viewed in the locker but aren’t allowed to enter the locker until after the auction is completed.

The cost can range from $1.00 to $5,000.00 and you are usually bidding on the entire contents of one storage locker. Normally, storage locker auction bids are at least a few hundred dollars. If you win the auction, you’re responsible for removing the contents of the storage locker.

The returns on storage locker auctions can range from next to nothing to actual treasures. You may find jewelry, comic book collections, rare historical documents, antiques, gold and silver, or even classic automobiles.
