Marc Jacobs, Diane Von Furstenberg, Alexander Wang and Michael Kors all followed, according to New York-based social media agency WhisprGroup, which analyzed layers of Twitter algorithms throughout New York Fashion Week to determine the most popular trends, hashtags and designers related to spring 2013 collections.
Hosting a full runway show rather than the smaller presentations to which she is accustomed, Beckham drew the attention of Twitter users worldwide.
Social media played other roles during New York Fashion Week, including the live stream hosting of Jacobs’ collection to the public by popular fashion blogger Leandra Medine of the Man Reppeller and Furstenberg’s surprise use of Google Glass glasses both personally and on her runway models.
Tweets associated with this year’s New York Fashion Week (#nyfw) doubled over last year’s spring collections unveiling with a total of 671,028 mentions. The United States was responsible for the lion’s share of those tweets, with 72 percent originating there. Next in line was the United Kingdom, which issued 5 percent of New York Fashion Week tweets.
