(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, October 15, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The man accused of defacing a Mark Rothko painting was in court recently, to face charges of his criminal damage of the painting. The man denies charges of his accused doing at the London’s Tate Modern gallery.
Wlodzimierz Umaniec, appeared via a video-link in court to face his charges for damaging the famous painting. The painting itself is considered to be worth around $70 million, while the damage is in excess of $7,000
The Polish National provided a friend’s address when he spoke to confirm his personal details to the court.
Umaniec spent a majority of the hearing rather stoic, if not perturbed, with his arms folded. The Chair of the Bench Vicky Watkins remanded him in custody until next week.
Umaniec is an artist who co-founded a movement known to some as “yellowism” and was arrested Monday for the vandalism to which he is accused.
He allegedly stepped over the barrier at the art gallery and wrote his name and the words “12 a potential piece of yellowism” before fleeing the scene.
Persons were prevented from entering or exiting the building after the vandalism was discovered.
Rothko art pieces are known for earning tens of millions in offers per piece. Earlier in the week, Rothko’s Orange, Red, and Yellow sold for $74 million, which is the highest price paid for a post-War piece.
The defaced painting, called Black on Maroon, was donated to the exhibit in 1969.
