(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, January 12, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The total in ad spending rose above 7% in the third quarter, with the summer Olympics and the political campaigns in full swing; yet, the gains failed to materialize in print media.
Magazines took in a 2.9% hit for the third quarter, while newspaper ads fell by 1.5%, according to the data released by Kantar Media on Monday. The results are paralleled to those for the rest of the year for magazine businesses, who are down 3% through the first nine months for 2012.
Internet display ads (without video/mobile included) suffered their largest loss over a 4.3% decline.
Radio, outdoor and FSI spending enjoyed bumps, while the television media gained the most traction in the year with a 15.3% growth. That growth included a 30% rise in the network sector.
When looked at by category, the consumer and b-to-b magazines fell a total of 3.2% and 4.2%. The report noted that, "Weaker spending from pharmaceutical and direct response marketers negated gains from the apparel and food categories."

Sunday edition magazines seemed to enjoy a stable quarter, falling 1.8%after a 7.6% decline in the second quarter. Still, the report pointed to the numbers possibly skewed due to the extra Sunday included within the quarter, which would have bolstered overall ad sales in comparison.
There was some silver-lining for magazines however. Local titles garnered a 3.5% increase for the quarter and gained ad spending in Spanish-language publications to the tune of 20.8% within the third quarter. That made it the highest growth sector in the study. The numbers come on the heels of an already strong 8.9% growth within the second quarter.
Spanish-language newspapers also had a strong quarter with a 5.2% rise
