(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, February 13, 2013 ) Detroit, MI -- When Michigan antique dealer Bruce McKenzie went to an antique auction more than 20 years ago, he had no idea it would lead to a successful business. Knightsbridge has thrived in Northville, Michigan, for the last 16 years.
“I got into the antique business by breaking my knee skiing,” McKenzie said. “I was home and I had nothing to do and I saw an auction in the paper. I said to my girlfriend, Linda, who’s now my wife, why don’t we go to this auction?? It looks like it might be fun. We went and I came home with a car full of stuff. After that, we just went to auctions for about three years. All we did was go on the weekends and buy stuff.”
With their inventory steadily growing Bruce discovered each antique he purchased was intriguing in its own way. He quickly found himself immersed in the history of the object he was collecting. He had a new passion for antiques. Bruce spent much of his free time checking out the local Michigan antique dealers, and going to local antique auctions.
“I bought so much stuff. The auctioneers thought I was a dealer,” McKenzie said.
After Bruce’s house became filled with antiques, he decided to make money with his passion by putting up some of his antiques for sale. Bruce rented a booth at a local antique mall, and the idea to open his own place came to mind. Bruce asked Linda if she’d like to open an antique mall with him. It wasn’t until they were married before he could talk her into doing it.
Bruce’s wife Linda began searching Oakland County and Wayne County looking for the right location in her spare time. After feeling as though she had searched the entire state of Michigan, she eventually came across the perfect location for their antique shop. Sixteen years later, the Knightsbridge Antique Mall is home to two hundred dealers in twenty-six thousand square feet.
Over the years, Bruce has purchased and sold items from many different customers all over the state. While Knightsbridge is located in Northville, MI, many of the antique dealers come from far and wide to sell their treasures at Knightsbridge. Bruce can’t believe how his customer base has grown and changed over the years.
“People send their friends to me. It’s amazing how after 16 years, I’ve brought things from parents and now I’m buying things from their children,” McKenzie said. “I love what I do.”
Bruce McKenzie runs Knightsbridge Antiques and is an active antique dealer in the state of Michigan. Bruce spends time at local community centers speaking on antiques and even offering antique appraisals. Funds from these events are donated to the American Cancer Society.
