Last week, the music mogul made the announcement that his new venture into sports, while Hov raised the bar with a global partnership with his entertainment company and Universal Music Group.
The Roc Nation will continue to exist as an independent music label, but will now be within the Universal brand. "This agreement presents a unique opportunity for Roc Nation's artists — being able to continue to operate as an independent label with the strength, power and reach of the best major," Hov said in a press release. "I look forward to a long and prosperous collaboration with UMG. It feels good to be home."
Hov founded the Roc Nation a half-decade ago after his split with the Roc-A-Fella co-founder and partners Damon Dash Kareem Burke. Within those five years since, he has created a brand that has grown far beyond the record and music label, and has branched into many areas.
The newest maneuver is likely to do with the impact of Rihanna, who is under a Def Jam contract, and thus under Universal already. Jay-Z has also made it a priority to venture into sports, as well as production in other entertainment venues.
"All of us at UMG are thrilled that Jay and Roc Nation chose UMG as their partners, knowing we will support their artists with a level of resources, expertise and passion that is simply unmatched in the industry," UMG Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge said in the statement.
