New Study Hopes to Find Key to Mending Broken Relationships

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, April 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new study from an Australian therapist is looking to shed some light on the chemical reactions based upon smell.

Adam Guastella, who is a couple's therapist sees a “repetitive loop” of talking around problems at the heart of matters and avoidance of facing them head-on. “Therapists are always waiting for an ‘a-ha’ moment, and we try lots of things to create [it],” said the clinical psychologist and principal research fellow at the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Research Institute.

Guastella is already an internationally recognized researcher, thanks in part to his discovery of how oxytocin promotes emotional understanding within youth that have autism. Dr. Guastella had recently read about oxytocin's recent branding as a “love hormone” and now he has begun to wonder if there is merit to the concept, and if it could save relationships.

Due to that very interest, he decided to run a study that spanned a three-week period, with 40 Australian couples taking part. Each couple took a hit of oxytocin through a nasal spray before the start of respective therapy sessions.

While the results are not yet published, the data has reportedly shown that with the assistance of oxytocin, the repetitive loop breaks for most couples. This seems to be occurring due to the ability to recall memories with more emotion and detail. They appear more to open to other person's perspective regarding the issue, which assist in the bond beginning to rebuilt, says Guastella.

“If we can make it so that an ‘a-ha’ moment occurs, it’s going to save a lot of heartbreak, a lot of hostility between couples.”

It is a seductive concept, wherein failing marriages and partnerships can be rescued with a simple manipulation of the chemistry within the mind. In Canada, 40% of marriages are now expected to end in divorce before couples reach their 30th anniversary. Across the entirety of the western world, the divorce rate stands at about 50% overall.

Along with oxytocin and the related bonding hormone vasopressin, researchers are looking into the possible therapeutic uses of MDMA, which is best known for its illegal usage under the title “ecstasy”.
