(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, May 20, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A recent study of comparison in consumer interaction with online sales has shown significant changes thanks to mobile devices.
Event tickets were the largest section of use for online retail. Purchases of furniture and appliances accounted for 8% of all interactions.
The tally of time spent online retail searches and interaction was up 104% in February of 2013 as compared to three years prior. The total, according to comScore Inc. found that 34.9 billion minutes were spent in online retail as compared to 17.1 billion in 2010. The numbers have been shown in the report titled “State of the U.S. Online Retail Economy, Q1 2013.”
What is most noteworthy is the large amount of time spent on mobile devices, which has been a primary cause of the the time spent searching online retail. The online retail spent on smartphones shot up 385% in the three-year time-frame. Tablets, having not existed in 2010, contributed 5 billion minutes to the online retail numbers, according to comScore.
March 2013, 42% of the time that was spent on such sites through desktop usage was at 42%, while smartphone usage stood at 34%, and tablets accounted for 14%, says comScore.
The United States saw 137 million users of smartphones on such sites, while 60 million tablet users were also tallied. The smartphones and tablets accounted for 45% of the top 50 retailer extends to the desktop audience by 45% of all time spent. ComScore measured the retail visitors by desktops, desktop and mobile, and mobile only separately. Of all visitors to retail sites, 10 million desktop visitors and 4.5 million mobile-only visitors were counted.
While desktop numbers have surely dropped in the three-year period, the numbers show that the devices are still in primary use for most retail purchases. At least that appears to be the case for the short term.
