(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, May 19, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The latest study of television viewing habits is showing that the number of viewers who tune into network shows that are available on demand have risen sharply since 2011. The shift was predictable to many, yet somehow seems to have caught the networks a bit off-guard.
The actual rise is a rather astonishing amount, as since two years prior, on-demand TV viewing has risen by over 60%. However, the trend of more and more content becoming available through various online channels such as Hulu and Netflix, the outcome should not be all that surprising to most.
Cable companies have noted the demand for shows such as “The Big Bang Theory” and “Game of Thrones” have made large jumps since their initial showing on the on-demand channels. “Family Guy” has continued to be a large draw on a fairly consistent basis.
A report by Rentrak, which works as an analytical firm that takes point in tracking entertainment industry information noted that the time spent viewing on-demand content has increased. From 2011 to 2012, viewership average viewing time rose 40%, and the tally on totals of on-demand programs available jumped 29% in the same time period.
Analysts compiled the numbers by looking over the four-year span of the data .
“There is no doubt that this kind of growth is reshaping budgets of cable operators, content providers and advertisers,” said Rentrak president Cathy Hetzel. “Our reporting gives perspective on how many ad dollars could be left behind if on-demand content is not considered by the planners of TV.”
