(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, May 31, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Ohio State University medical study focused on patients hospitalized in intensive care units on mechanical ventilators. Another music therapy study is being done at St. Louis University Cancer Center for patients with cancer who are receiving chemotherapy treatments, radiation therapy, and are recovering from surgery.
The studies separated patients into two groups. One group did not receive their favorite music to listen to through headphones, the other was offered. They found that when patients were able to listen to music, their anxiety and perception of pain was significantly lower than the group of patients that did not receive music therapy.
Crystal Weaver, the lead music therapist at SLU says the key to allowing patients to choose exactly what music they want to hear while undergoing treatment, rather than just giving them a preset list of music to choose from. Patients listen to all types of music for therapy, including country, contemporary, religious and music from a more classical and romantic period, from the 1930s, 40s 40s and 50s. Some even listen to music they sing in church.
The study at Ohio State University was led by Linda Chlan. Most patients choose positive music that gravitate to the concept of having a better experience while undergoing treatments.
