Berkeley Says Human Emotions Match Colors to Music

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, May 31, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to the research, Mozart’s perky Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major is most often associated with yellow and orange, bright hues, while his lonely Requiem in D minor is more likely to be linked to dark, bluish gray, a depressing color.

Vision scientist Stephen Palmer and a team of researchers recruited 100 men and women for the experiment. They had their subjects listen to 18 different selections from orchestral music by Mozart, Bach, and Brahms. Over half of the participants were chosen from the San Francisco area and half were from a totally different country, Mexico.

UC Berkeley reported that in the first experiment, subjects were asked to choose five of 37 colors that best matched the music they were listening to. The color palette consisted of different hues that ranged from vivid, medium and dark shades of red, orange, yellow, yellowgreen, green, green-blue, blue and purple.

A pattern was noticed in which participants routinely chose bright colors for upbeat music and darker colors for more gloomy music. When the subjects chose a color, they were asked to describe the type of music they had listened to on a scale of happy, sad, lively, dreary, angry and calm.

People in both the United States and Mexico linked the same pieces of classical orchestral music with the same colors. “This suggests that humans share a common emotional palette,” the researchers said in a statement.

The findings from the study were published in Journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and appears consisted with a 1987 peer-reviewed study that researched a much larger sample from ages 3 - 78, that showed that music association was not learned, but rather hardwired into our brains.
