U.S. Only Developed Country to Not Provide Mandatory Paid Vacation

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, June 07, 2013 ) Grand Baie, Mauritius -- Memorial Day weekend is considered by many to be the launch of the summer vacation of Americans; however, nearly 25% of all Americans will be receiving no pay while they enjoy the sun and relaxation that comes with a summer break.

A new study stated that the United States is the only advanced economy that fails to create mandatory paid vacation days or holiday breaks.

The Center for Economic and Policy Research brought back a 2007 study that compared the United States with over 20 other countries and found that the U.S. Is the only nation that fails to require paid vacation for its work force.

The U.S. Is only now making its way out of the recession that began in 2007, and according to the researchers, few companies have been able to boost employee benefits due to only meager recovery totals being earned.

“Relying on businesses to voluntarily provide paid leave just hasn’t worked,” said John Schmitt, senior economist and co-author of the report.

The authors of the study also reported that the number of European countries each guarantee workers a minimum of 20 paid vacation days each year. France requires workers to have a 30-day paid vacation once a year. Canada and Japan each guarantee a minimum of 10 paid vacation days per year to each employee.

The report found that the average number of paid vacation days provided to American workers in the private sector, and found 16 would not even meet the minimum required by law in 19 countries.

The trouble with such numbers is the fact that the lack of paid time off and chronic low-wage span across the board in the United States. According to their numbers, researchers noted 49% of low-wage workers have paid vacation in the U.S., as compared to the 90% of higher-wage workers.

Anal Gryson, a congressman from Florida, introduced a bill that will force employers to provide a week of paid vacation each year. The bill, which would amend the Fair Labor Standards, is still within the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
