(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, June 10, 2013 ) Los Angeles, CA -- Researchers from Kuopio University Hospital followed 397 Finnish children throughout the first year of their lives and found those that live with pets had fewer ear infections and colds.
Eija Bergroth, who worked at the Kuopio University Hospital said that the strongest effect was with dogs, but they aren’t sure why it wasn’t as strong with cat contacts. “It might have something to do with dirt brought inside by the dogs, especially since the strongest protective effect was seen with children living in houses where dogs spent a lot of time outside.”
According to Karen DeMuth, assistant professor of pediatrics at Emory University, children with pets are healthier because of the “microbiome hypothesis.”
DeMuth says the microbiome hypothesis is that early-life exposure to wide varieties of microbes lets those outside microbes mix with the microbes in the gut and helps them keep the immune system from reacting against itself and causing autoimmune disease, or from reacting against stuff you should ignore and causing allergy.
However, DeMuth warns against bringing a dog into the home if your child is already sick. Having a dog in the house early can protect against wheezing or respiratory infections, but this exposure has to happen very early in life and it will not help children who already have respiratory autoimmune diseases like asthma. In fact, it can worsen their symptoms.
