(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, July 18, 2013 ) Orlando, FL -- On July 10th, world-renowned artist Bruce Beasley was on hand at the UC Berkeley campus for the placement of the second of five large stainless-steel sculptures he created. The UC Berkeley campus in Berkeley, California will be displaying the artworks over the next year.
The piece will be placed in the Mining Circle pool in front of the Hearst Memorial Mining Building. Once installed, and the pool filled with water to cover the supporting structure, the group of intertwined aluminum circles will appear to be floating on the surface of the water. This illusion is just one of the five sculptures from Beasley’s new “Rondo” series. The series will be placed around the campus through the summer and by fall; the free outdoor exhibit will be complete. Campus landscape architect Jim Horner assisted with the arrangement.
Beasley graduated from Berkeley in 1962. He is transporting the artwork from his West Oakland studio at his own expense as well as covering the construction costs. Since graduating from the school, he has become famous for his sculptured art. Presently he has his artwork in nearly forty galleries around the globe. “I liken this to a gallery show without walls or hours or admission,” says Horner. “It’s pretty exciting to have art on this scale from a world-renowned artist.”
Each of the pieces is large in scale weighing between 1,200 to 1,500 pounds and measuring 12 to 15 feet. They are structured from stainless steel, transported by flatbed trailer and lifted into place using a crane. They are sculptured into interlaced polished rings, with no visible lines of support, which form a lighter-than-air configuration.
