(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, July 20, 2013 ) Essex, UK -- ACTION-Housing bought the building in October of 2011 to renovate and house Uptown workers and people with disabilities. Eighteen of the 43 lofts will be reserved for the deaf blind and people with limited physical mobility. The tenants are eligible for occupancy if they make less than 60 percent of the area’s median income, which is $49,805 in Alleghany County, which is where the building sits.
The building cost $12 million dollars in renovations, but BNY Mellon purchased $11 million of that for low-income housing tax credits to help with the costs. According to Rick Savido, president of the BNY Mellon Community Development Corp., the building was in really rough condition so the team really had to visualize what they wanted to do with it to make it happen.
Yvonne McBride, a writer, lives on the fourth floor and is one of the first tenants to rent one of the units. She says it was imperative that she remain on Hill where she was born and raised, as she is working on a historical novel about the area.
ACTION-Housing also wanted to provide housing for people who could walk to work and informed employers in the area of the new loft apartments available. The apartments all have different layouts and floor plans, including one and two story apartments throughout the buildings to help fit the personalized need of each tenant.
The building also meets the green-building standards of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, which helps the company receive tax credits, but will not be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.
