Vid Taylor transforms Times newsclippings into pop art

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, March 15, 2014 ) New York, NY -- Vid Taylor’s upcoming art exhibit in New York City is a sign of the Times.

Literally and figuratively. His new project, the “Times Newsaic,” is derived solely from New York Times snippets. After reading the newspaper, he tears out sections of pages and then scans the images and words into digital format. By rearranging the pieces, Taylor creates a unique piece of art, which is transformed into a 30-inch square limited edition screen printed lithograph.

The artwork is culled from the news and has the texture of a mosaic, thus the name “Newsaic.”

As part of the Select Fair and Frieze Art Week, Taylor’s Newsaic collection will be on display from May 8-11 at the Altman Building, 135 West 18th Street, in the heart of Chelsea, a historic area of Manhattan’s West Side.

“I’m very excited to have this new body of work as a part of the Select Fair,” says Taylor, who owns and runs Popboompow, a New York pop art studio. “People from all over the world will be in the city to see this and other exhibits of fine art. It’s a terrific opportunity to expose them to something new.”

A critical part of creating the Newsaic is taking words and images out of context, combining them together to form something that almost contradicts itself. “It’s like breathing new life into the structure,” Taylor explains. “There is a certain poetry to this. It is alluring in the loss of the initial meaning yet the residue still remains.”

In order to display this fine art properly, Taylor is seeking additional funding. His goal is to raise $10,000 to defray the cost of frames, materials, film, printing, canvas and other expenses.

To meet this goal, he has launched a Kickstarter campaign, where supporters can donate varying amounts of money to back this effort. To make a donation, view the artwork or obtain more information about this project, visit his page on Kickstarter.

Thus far, more than $5,600 has been raised. Depending on their donation level, contributors can receive miniature Newsaic samples signed by the artist, limited edition lithographs and full-size Newsaic replicas. The top pledge level fetches a 48-inch square Newsaic canvas print of the donor’s choice, signed and personalized by Taylor.

The Times Newsaic is not really new. Taylor began crafting this type of pop art in 2008 and has created hundreds of pieces. The exhibit at the Altman Building, however, is the first public display of this work. Taylor will be featuring his most recent pieces.
