Robin said that people enjoy reading romantic comedy not only because it's easy to read and entertaining, but also because they can relate to the characters and stories. ‘We've all fallen in love and had our share of romantic mishaps,' she said, ‘and romantic comedy makes us laugh at ourselves because we can see ourselves in the characters and the things they do.'
Robin's book takes place in the world of internet dating – an endless source of woeful dates-gone-wrong stories. ‘I dabbled in it myself years ago, and although I never experienced any dating disasters, I knew and heard about lots of people who did, so I was able to adapt those stories for my novel. But I don't want to give the impression that it's all doom – I know plenty of women who've met their Mr Right on the internet.'
Robin said that another reason that romantic comedy is popular is that it adds another dimension to romance. ‘A lot of readers are not into pure romance, and the comedy adds another element that makes the book more appealing and true to life for them. And then there's the escapism element – when we're laughing, we're not thinking about our worries.'
Popular romantic comedy authors include Sophie Kinsella, Jennifer Crusie and Janet Evanovich, who have all written many bestselling novels. The categorization of novels into genres is an arbitrary exercise for the purpose of selling them, but the boundaries are often blurred. For example, novels by the above authors are also categorized as chick-lit, and novels by authors such as Marian Keyes, Helen Fielding and Candace Bushnell are classified as chick-lit, but are also romantic comedies.
‘In the end, deciding on a genre classification for your book comes down to finding your readership,' Robin said. ‘You have to research which category is going to find you the readers who enjoy your books. Often it's a matter of trial and error, but the good thing about selling on Amazon is that you can change your novel's category with a click of your mouse, so you can keep on experimenting for as long as it takes.'
