How to tune a badurria using the Chromatic Tuner

(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, October 22, 2014 ) Fort Myers, Florida -- Tanbi Music, selling on Amazon a metronome tuner and other music accessories, had released last week a YouTube video showing how to use the metronome tuner for tuning a bandurria (La Bandurria) – an ethnic string instrument originating from Spain, and found today also in South American and the Philippines.

Similar to the mandolin, the bandurria strings are arranged in pairs, and it is played using a pick (plectrum). First mentioned in 14th-15th centuries, it apparently had back than 3 pairs of strings. During the next centuries in gradually acquired first a fourth pair, and then a fifth and a sixth.

The modern Spanish bandurria has 12 strings – 6 pairs, and is used mainly for folk music. The South American bandurria has kept the more ancient form, with only 4 pairs. The Philippine version – which is the one used in the Tanbi Music instructional video - had evolved from the original bandurria brought to the Philippines with the Spanish occupation (1521 to 1898), and has 14 strings.

The Philippine version of the bandurria has a shorter neck than the Spanish one, and is commonly used for folk music in a Rondalla – an ensemble combining plucked string instruments, also brought to the Philippines by the Spaniards.
The Philippine bandurria is tuned, low to high: F# B E A D G. The Tanbi Music metronome tuner has auto tuning modes for tuning guitars and bass guitars in their standard tuning, and a chromatic mode that can be used for alternative guitar tuning and for many other instruments, such as the bandurria.

Says Debbie Barak, sales manager of Tanbi Music: "Our metronome tuner is used by our customers for many instruments. Customers have told us they tune their violin, trumpet, and other instruments. We have decided to demonstrate the capabilities of our chromatic tuning mode with non-standard instruments, such as the bandurria, which is a common folk music instrument in several parts of the world."
