Statistics compiled by the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association confirm that the practice is fully engrained in the American experience. A study conducted by the HPBA in 2013 revealed that eighty per cent of American households own a grill or a smoker and that ninety-seven per cent had used it in the preceding year. About fourteen million grills were sold in the U.S. in 2013. The biggest days of the year for grilling are the Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day, but sixty per cent are using the grill year-round. Grilling is being done just about everywhere people congregate out of doors including backyards, beaches, public parks, football games and NASCAR races. Forty-one per cent of grill owners tailgated in a two year period.
