Thomas Deir Studios will be open for two days only, December 13 and 14 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm., at 1311 Kika Street in Maunawili Estates, Kailua, located on Oahu's windward side. Deir's studios are fascinating and have two distinct functions. One studio is for painting on canvas where Deir produces most of his original tropical artwork with a paint he invented. The other studio is for creating his tile murals and mosaics. The Hawaii tile artist designs, paints and manufactures his tile murals in his tile and mosaics studio. The hand-painted tiles are fired in his kiln. His mosaics featuring Hawaiian green sea turtles are hand cut from marble or granite, painted, fired and set on nylon mesh making it ready for installation in floors or counter tops.
Deir states, "I was invited to participate in the Oahu Open Studio that will occur during the month of December. At first it seemed overwhelming to allow the public in my studios but it sparked an idea to just have folks come and talk story, similar to what I experienced growing up in Hawaii. For me the holidays represent times of big gatherings and talking story with friends and family. Anyone who visits is free to tour the studios but the highlight for me will be to meet new people and talk story."
