The team behind The Solar Book Light had four main requirements when making the reading light. It had to be small and light enough to feel comfortable when clipped on a book, it had to be rechargeable to eliminate the hassle of carrying extra batteries, it had to have a steel neck as the plastic necks tend to get floppy and hard to control and most importantly it had to have solar recharging.
The idea on the power was to be entirely hassle free in that one should leave it to charge during the day and use it during the night. An ideal that could apply to all artificial lighting. Considering the energy and light that nature delivers, the very fact of storing that and using it later would reduce man's power consumption dramatically.
Traditional book lamps suffer from few design problems. Trying to be totally feather light they include uncommon replaceable batteries that require replacement. Then because some lamps are re-chargeable to reduce costs the neck is replaced with plastic which doesn't hold well and the LED lights tend to sag. These issues have been addressed with The Solar Book Lamp to make a better lamp for readers and for the environment.
While advertised as a reading lamp, The Solar Book Light is versatile for use in car, camping and just about any travel situation that needs a bit of light.
With the general public's awareness increasing about caring for the environment it is important that not only the big ticket items turn to renewable energy but the small ones as well. Everyone can contribute by doing something.
Aude Lederer, Co-Creator of the The Solar Book Lamp Company said, "It was important to us to make something that helps the environment while being hassle free. Unfortunately many people don't opt for environmentally friendly solutions because of the additional hassle it brings. We believe that with our book lamp that charges itself we have made it easier to use than even USB charging (even though we did include that option as well)".
