An Alaskan Husky breed of dog named Shadow, many years ago was observed by many people, doing something that was very attention grabbing and very funny to see. If the owners of the dog would put on a CD by Roy Orbison, a very popular singing artist of the past, Shadow would go running up to the house and put his ears close to the door, so he could hear better. He would then howl along with Roy! It was obvious to all that he was not at all disturbed by the music, but rather he seemed to LOVE IT! He just enjoyed singing along!
Modern research has revealed that animals can identify different rhythms, and musical patterns in songs. It's no wonder that even some birds can be taught to sing along with actual tunes.
Like dogs, cows also prefer classical music, and will even produce more milk when listening to a relaxing composition. There have been studies which have shown that horses can synchronize the pace of their trot to the rhythm of music playing in the background.
Some animals such as birds and whales even sing their own complex songs, and make various special sounds to communicate with each other. Some of the sounds do have the appearance of actual music. It could be that humans aren't the only ones that are able to make melodies and enjoy them as well.
We as humans therefore have come to recognize that the inherent nature of music is shared by humans and animals alike. It can be very beneficial, if listening to the right kinds of music, and can aid and help in many areas of life. Music therapy has become very popular in the past century and the healing power of music is being explored and investigated for more understanding.
There are many cases of veterinary hospitals using music to soothe and calm the animals from getting anxious and nervous in the high stress environment of a veterinarian's office or even an animal shelter.
