Children ultimately will be the legacy, but what kind of legacy will they really be? Everyone will accept the idea that children are the future, but there are higher values that cannot be imparted and learned through reading a textbook.
Today's world is producing an alarming decline of moral and spiritual values. Close-knit families and communities have diminished, and the pace of social change is almost dizzying. Gone are the days when most families attempted to bring up children to be moral and to have respect for their fellow man. Today, the 'me first' thinking of our highly competitive society has turned the multitudes into materialistic and very selfish humans.
In the "good old days", people looked out for one another more, and most people in the community recognized back then that their community would never be any better than the worst person among them. Therefore, they would team together and everyone would try to encourage and help all of the children in the community to become good, helpful, moral citizens. The days of "Father Knows Best" were indeed better times for our world!
Good behavior has to begin with the parents. Children imitate their parents, and it is a great responsibility indeed! If the parents are however products of negative societal influences, and are not confident in setting an example of what is good and bad, their children may very well become lost in a sea of diverse ideas without guidance, and the chances of those children becoming a positive factor in their communities are very slim.
Training of a child has to be accomplished at an early age. Once a child has grown older, it is not easy to change wrong patterns of development in their lives. Every day that passes in the life of a child is automatically a learning process, even if the child has not begun any formal education in school. All children need the maternal influences of mom, and the paternal influences of dad, to receive the very best training. That's not to say that homes without two parents are hopeless, because the job can still get done. It just takes a lot of extra hard work and mental effort from the parent who has to carry the whole load.
