Hunting/Fishing: Whether youÂ’re a beginner, advanced fly-fisherman or prefer trying your hand on the ice, there are many fishing options. Bighorn Lake is known for wall-eye and rainbow trout, among others and nearby Horseshoe Bend is a great winter ice fishing option. If youÂ’d rather feel the thrill of the chase, public and private lands around Sheridan are full of birds and big game. From elk and moose to pheasants and turkeys this is a hunterÂ’s paradise, just watch out for the black bears. Make sure to get your permits in order before heading out.
Hiking/Camping: Hunting and fishing are only a part of the wilderness experience; navigating trails and finding where to spend the night are equally important. Pull out your map and compass and explore the many trails of Bighorn National Forest and Cloud Park Wilderness. As evening approaches set up camp and fall asleep beneath the stars, breathing the fresh mountain air.
Trail Transportation: If hiking and hunting arenÂ’t really your thing, donÂ’t worry there are plenty of other adrenaline-filled options here. Rent a mountain bike and descend rocky terrain deep into the Tongue River Canyon. If the ground is covered in snow, try out some of the famous local snowmobiling trails in the Big Horn Mountains.
Inner Cowboy: For a pre-planned mancation, stay at a nearby dude ranch. Here, your inner cowboy can let loose as you learn how to rope cattle and ride horses. Ranches also offer access to guided hunts and great fishing on private lands. Generally they are all-inclusive with lodgings, food and sometimes fishing/hunting permits taken care of for you.
Head to Wyoming to lose the pampered city slicker and find your inner rugged outdoorsman.
