(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 30, 2010 ) Selma, OR - Deep below the Cascade Mountains, the High Cascades Aquifer holds close to 7.5 trillion gallons of freshwater, about the same as Lake Mead, the United State's largest reservoir. This aquifer feeds a steady, year-round flow into the Rogue River, allowing for fun rapids and raftable whitewater much later than on most rivers in the west.
While other rivers dry up in late summer, the Rogue offers cool water, excellent swimming and rafting well into October. The steady flows from the aquifer also allow for wildlife to flourish in the Rogue River canyon and it is common to see otter, bear, deer, bald eagle, blue heron, turtle, osprey and other species on a Rogue River rafting trip.
"The aquifer is an ever ready source of water for the Rogue," notes Gordon Grant, a research hydrologist with the U.S. Forest Service. "The aquifer accounts for between 10 to 25 percent of the Rogue's flow when it meets the ocean."
