Lakes and rivers call to boaters and fishermen, state parks invite campers and explorers, urban centers share culinary treats and cultural experiences, while small towns offer quirky festivals and a taste of history. Here are a few outdoor ideas to get started:
Paddle: Visitors can experience the thrill of whitewater rafting, hydrospeeding, jetboating, and kayaking on the Snake and Payette Rivers or at KellyÂ’s Whitewater Park in Cascade. Experienced rafting outfitters help travelers choose between milder family adventures and full day thrills. For a lazy day on the water, locals may pick a float through the capital city on the Boise River or splashing around at one of the areaÂ’s many lakes.
Pedal: For those preferring the wind in their hair to the sea in their face, IdahoÂ’s many bike trails are sure to satisfy. Mountain bikers can head to the trails at Brundage Mountain Resort, Bogus Basin, or Owyhee Canyonlands. For a carefree ride, cyclists can follow the Greenbelt, a popular 22-mile pathway connecting many riverside parks in Boise. In May, Boise will be part of the Exergy Tour international ladies pro cycling race.
Putt: Travelers looking to get on the green will be happily surprised by the regionÂ’s beautiful public golf courses. The City of McCall Golf Course was established in 1934 and today showcases three, nine-hole courses. Work off some steam at the range or play through Banbury Golf CourseÂ’s challenging 6,890 yard par 71 course. At Jug Mountain Ranch, the day can be split between double track mountain biking trails and an 18-hole championship golf course.
