(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, May 24, 2012 ) Dakar, Senegal – Towns owns the newly relocated salon, This Is It Salon and Day Spa on Detroit’s west side at Greenfield and Seven Mile Roads. He has always looked for ways of creativity in his in beauty industry. And when he has a period of “imagination block,” he follows the African roots of ancestry. He looked towards the people and culture of Africa. Here is a peak at his creative journey.
On the drive from the airport to the downtown hotel, the Detroit hair stylist began stirring the creative juices of design ideas for his customers back home. The economic gap between rich and poor are very dramatic. Yet, his concepts for a natural weave hair style came from the Senegalese women who were mostly from the servant class of young to mid-age females.
“As African ideals of beauty have become westernized, traditional hairstyles are a way for African women to retain and express pride for their past,” according to Mary Jo Arnoldi, and Christine Mullen Kreamer. “When the question arises about why Africans take their hair so seriously, the answer is simply that they take their life and death seriously.”
For African-American women especially, natural hair weaves, have become a fashion trend and a common practice among black women, not only in the United States but all over the world. As a result, according to Gary Towns, we can design natural weave hairstyles for short haircuts or natural hair weaves for thinning hair.
Towns plans to use his experiences abroad to serve his clients with more than just a beauty school training. “I want our customers to feel beautiful and proud.”
“Leaving the salon, our customers walk, smile and confidence have all been upgraded to their highest level of self-esteem,” promised Towns. And, finally, our customers should expect complements, gazes, and in some cases, even whistling from strangers!”
