(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, August 09, 2012 ) Santa Fe, NM -- “I’ve been developing some work that didn’t seem to fit the Canyon Road gallery,” said Mark White. “Especially some things that were a little more contemporary, a little more towards the cutting edge.”
When a space became available at the Railyard, Mark went in to take a look. “I knew it was a contemporary-looking space,” he says. “Wheels started turning really quickly after that.”
A cluster of vibrant oil paintings in the front room serves as a complement and counterpoint. He recently took a trip to Laguna Beach, California to study the ocean for the first time and created a series of beach scenes engraved on aluminum with waves that shimmer and tumble as you pass by. The silhouettes of animals, plants and people are cut out of the metal, leaving intriguing negative forms that swim through glowing pools of light. Mark does some of his paintings on curved aluminum surfaces, which allows him to create a perfectly smooth texture and conjure a sense of movement and perspective. In order to take in these works, you must interact with them, rocking on your feet and turning your head.
Mark’s new sculptures are particularly well-suited for the space. They reach toward the lofty ceiling and curl intriguingly on the floor. The new work is a series of stainless steel pipe sculptures that twist, swirl and tie together like great strands of DNA. Their orange color equally lends them an arresting visual punch and an ancient, timeless quality that’s rare in contemporary sculpture.
“I couldn’t believe what a difference this space made in showing this work,” said Mark.
Mark is known for his colorful wind sculptures that fly above Mark White Fine Art on Canyon Road, and illuminate his sculpture garden.
