(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, August 22, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- It has been revealed in a poll conducted by The Quinnipiac University that almost 54 percent people in New York are completely against the plan of Michael Bloomberg, mayor of the city, to ban super-sized sweet drinks.
56% of New Yorkers are also against his proposed ban on free diaper bags being given to new mothers in order to support breastfeeding.
New York residents opposed Bloomberg’s proposal to restrict the servings of soda drink to no more than 473 ml, which is 16 ounces.
However, 42 percent people in the city also supported this measure and it is expected to be put into practice in the upcoming year.
The soda drink that is 16-ounce size is much bigger than the normal can but is not more than half of the largest sized container which seems like a bucket. These larger sizes are often served in cinemas and sports arenas.
However, surprisingly, many New Yorkers opposed Bloomberg’s plan in which he urged hospitals to stop providing diaper bags to new mothers in order to support breastfeeding.
These diaper bags contain formula samples. Bloomberg alleges that these samples usually discourage breastfeeding by providing new mothers free baby formula.
According to the poll, 56 percent citizens were against this plan and just 24 percent New Yorkers supported the idea to encourage breastfeeding.
Many critics went against Bloomberg’s plans by saying to the extent that he wants to make New York a nanny state.
Maurice Carroll, the Polling Institute director at the Quinnipiac University, said that their poll shows that people do not like Bloomberg’s idea to minimise the size of sugary drinks. Carroll also says that many New Yorkers are against the ban on free diaper bags as well.
However, Carroll said that most people agree with Bloomberg in the matter of putting limitations on the excessive use of alcohol.
He stated, "Voters disagree with Mayor Michael Bloomberg's push to increase breastfeeding and to limit the size of sugary drinks, but they like the idea of cracking down on alcohol abuse.”
Carroll also expressed that the general opinion of people about Bloomberg is good. They feel he serves the health sector quite effectively; in addition, most New Yorkers also rejected the idea that the mayor wants to turn New York into a nanny state.
