(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, September 04, 2012 ) Houston, TX -- The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, known as the largest livestock exhibition and the largest rodeo event in the world, will be back in full swing by 2013. The HLSR, as it is sometimes called, concluded its 2012 run earlier this year, and now the organizers of the event have begun dropping hints as to what to expect for 2013.
The 2013 Houston Rodeo has a lot to live up to, though, given the stellar reception enjoyed by the event this year. To try and live up to expectations, the 2013 event will reportedly feature the comeback of George Strait. The popular country music singer, who first played the rodeo in 1983 and has since played 20 more times, will be the special guest of the 2013 Houston Rodeo. He is set to perform during the last Sunday of the show and will be the main celebrity to close the event.
Steve Stevens, chairman of the board of the Houston Rodeo, said: “We’ve had a 30-year partnership with George. We’re just thrilled to death – it’s going to be a wonderful night.”
This is not the first time that the rodeo event will call in celebrities to help boost its appeal. The Houston Rodeo has featured some of the biggest stars and music icons in the world including Elvis Presley, Selena, Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, and Enrique Iglesias, among many others.
This will be the first time, however, that an extra day will be added to the event just to accommodate a concert-only show. The 2013 Houston Rodeo will thus run for 21 days instead of 20 and is currently scheduled to run from February 25 to March 17. Lineup reports say George Strait will be opened by Martina McBride and The Randy Rogers Band.
Whether these appearances will be enough to top the success of the 2012 event, time can only tell.
The Houston Rodeo 2012, which celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, set a number of new attendance records. The show itself brought in a total of 1,283,419 people, while the total attendance for the whole event is 2,257,970 visitors, the second highest in the history of the show.
The Houston Rodeo 2012 also saw a new single-day record when it attracted a total of 153,159 visitors last March 17, 2012.
Three performances during the event also set attendance records, while five performances made it to the all-time top 20 list for the highest paid attendance. These performances include those by:
At number 1 is Jason Aldean with 74,901 visitors, while Duelo and La Original Banda El Limon is at number 2 with 74,588. The Band Perry bags the third spot with 74,241, while Brad Paisley lands at number 8 with 73,757. The Zac Brown Band also made it to number 11 with 73,374.
The president of the event, Skip Wagner, attributed the success of the 2012 run to ‘mostly beautiful weather, Spring Break, amazing athletes, superstar concerts, unique family entertainment, and the world’s best livestock show’. He called this the ‘winning formula for fun’.
The HLSR brings in nearly two million visitors every year and requires as many as sixteen thousand volunteers. Events featured include bull riding, livestock judging, concerts, a parade, a carnival, barbecue and wine competitions, trail rides, auctions, wine competitions, and shopping sales.
