(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, September 07, 2012 ) New York, NY -- Disney’s Newsies the Musical began its Broadway run at the Nederlander Theatre last March. Now, the production has that it has become an open-ended run and will continue to perform at the said New York venue until next year.
The new theatrical production from Disney made headlines and has continued to do so throughout its Broadway run so far. The musical is based on the 1992 Disney film Newsies, which was inspired by the Newsboys Strike that happened in New York City in 1899. Last year, in September through October 2011, the musical held its world premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey before it premiered on New York’s Broadway this year.
The Broadway production opened for previews on March 15 to 29, 2012 before it was extended through August 19. Eventually, however, Disney announced that it would be an open-ended engagement. As of now, the company has announced the final schedule of shows until January 6, 2013. There is no confirmation yet as to where the show will go after Broadway, but early reports are saying that the show ‘may be looking for a home in the West End’ and expected to be there by late 2013 or early 2014.
The show features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, choreography by Christopher Gattelli, and a book by Harvey Fierstein. It is directed by Jeff Calhoun, and boasts of the trademark lavish sets and costumes Disney stage productions always come with. The cast is also led by the charismatic Jeremy Jordan, who plays the leader of the newsboys named Jack Kelly. Other cast members include Andrew Keenan-Bolger, who plays Crutchie, and Kara Lindsay, who plays the role of Katherine.
Based on its performance so far, the Newsies is considered as the most successful outing from Disney Theatrical Productions since The Lion King.
With sales further advancing, and with critics likening it to Oliver!, Annie, and Les Miserables, the Newsies seems to have a brighter future ahead of it.
