(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, September 07, 2012 ) New York, NY -- In January 2012, it was announced that the play Peter and the Starcatcher was coming to Broadway. It found a home in the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where the story of the orphan boy who became Peter Pan finally came to life last April 15, 2012.
Peter and the Starcatcher was initially staged at the La Jolla Playhouse in winter of 2009 before it was re-staged Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop last March 2011. Last April, the timeless prequel to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan debuted on Broadway after successful previews ran from March 28. Most recently, the production announced that the show’s Broadway run will be open-ended and will continue until next year.
The story of Peter and the Starcatcher originated from a bestselling children’s novel published by Hyperion Books, a subsidiary of Disney. The book, which debuted in 2004, was written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. It provided a backstory for famed character Peter Pan. The book is followed by four other sequels namely Peter and the Shadow Thieves, Peter and the Secret of Rundoon, Peter and the Sword of Mercy, and The Bridge to Neverland, which was most recently released in 2011.
On May 2012, Walt Disney Pictures announced that a film based on Peter and the Starcatcher is in the works. It will be written by Jesse Wigutow and will be directed by Gary Ross, director of The Hunger Games. Filming is set to begin in 2013.
While fans of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan await the film, they can witness the tale live onstage at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. So far, it has garnered great response from stage critics, with the New York Times calling it ‘the most exhilarating Broadway storytelling in decades’ and the Entertainment Weekly describing it as an ‘absurdly funny fantastical journey’.
The production features Matthew Saldivar as the Black Stache, Celia Keenan-Bolger as Molly, Adam Chanler-Berat as Peter or simply ‘the boy’, and Kevin Del Aguila as Smee, among several other talented cast members. The play was written by Rick Elice, and directed by Roger Rees and Alex Timbers. The fantastical set is designed by Donyale Werle, while costumes are from Paloma Young. The music that accompanies the story onstage is directed by Marco Paguia.
