(Entertainment-NewsWire.com, September 14, 2012 ) New York, NY – The European musical sensation Rebecca is officially coming to Broadway. The official schedule has been released, with the first performance scheduled on October 30, 2012. The musical has chosen Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre as its home, which it will occupy until the end of its Broadway run. At the moment, the scheduled shows continue well into 2013, with the last full show scheduled on the 26th of May. Announcements of shows beyond this date are yet to be made.
Rebecca The Musical is a drama musical that has conquered a lot of hearts in Europe and also in Japan. Now, it is set to do the same in America with Oscar-winning playwright Christopher Hampton and Michael Kunze at the helm.
Although the Broadway production came in expense of a cancelled London production, fans of the show feels positive about the musical’s debut in Broadway.
Rebecca The Musical is based on the novel of the same name written by Daphne du Maurier. The book and lyrics of the musical are written by Michael Kunze, while Sylvester Levay pens the music. The plot sticks close to the original novel, in which Maxim DeWinter, his new wife, and their housekeeper Mrs. Danvers face their changed lives together with the memory of the first Mrs. DeWinter – Rebecca – haunting them.
The musical premiered on September 28, 2006 at the Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria. It ran for three years, after which subsequent productions were launched in Japan, Finland, and other European locations. In Japan, it was produced at the Imperial Theatre in Tokyo. In Finland, it was performed at the Helsingin kaupunginteatteri in Helsinki. It has also bee produced in Budapest, Stuttgart, St. Gallen, and Bucharest. The 2012 to 2013 Broadway run will be the musical’s debut on the American stage.
The US debut will be directed by Michael Blakemore and Francesca Zambello and choreographed by Graciela Daniele. The role of Maxim will be played by Ryan Silverman, while Karen Mason takes on the role of Mrs. Danvers.
If the title and the story seems familiar, this is because the story of Rebecca has also been told onscreen in a classic Alfred Hitchcock film.
Recently, the US production of Rebecca delayed its rehearsal start date following the death of one of its major sponsors. The rehearsals are now set to begin on the 24th of September. No performances are cancelled, though, but the preview and opening dates may be revised. All Broadhurst Theatre tickets for the shows, however, are still selling as usual at ACheapSeat.com.
