This September, they will return to the August Wilson Theatre, where the musical also debuted back in 2005. Additionally, they will be in several other US cities such as Las Vegas and Pittsburgh. The documentary-style musical unearthing the lives of one of the most successful 60s rock ‘n roll bands will also visit Connecticut come October, while its Canadian leg will move to Saskatoon. Jersey Boys the Musical is now scheduled for shows until July 2013.
So far, the musical, which spotlights on the life of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, has received rave reviews for its 2012 tour performances. Although it was launched in Broadway several years ago, its part jukebox, part concert format seems to appeal to today’s audience as much as it did in the past. The musical has won a Tony for Best Musical, among other awards.
The current Jersey Boys tour is made more memorable by the return of John Lloyd Young, the actor who created the role of Frankie Valli when the musical first came to Broadway. His performance in the musical has won Young a Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Award for lead actor in a musical. He has also won a Theatre World award. This is considered as one of the reasons driving the phenomenal success of Jersey Boys the Musical in its 2012 tour.
Meanwhile, the long-rumored feature film version of the musical is now entering the final stages of preparation. In August, it has began casting for its lead roles, with director Jon Favreau of Iron Man fame and casting director Ellen Lewis at the helm. The search for the four stars of Four Seasons namely Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi is underway.
According to latest reports, production is slated to begin in January. And although earlier reports stated that the film will be released in 2014, updates say the producers are gunning for a 2013 Christmas release.
